Major Radio and TV Event in Brazil Ignores Digital Radio, but Highlights the New Version of Digital TV

None of the major global groups developing digital radio will have a voice at one of Brazil’s main radio and TV events. While the agenda includes the evolution of digital TV, digital radio remains entirely absent.
From my direct contact with broadcasters, I can affirm that the subject is hardly understood in the country. Even station technicians show great detachment. This is serious: gatherings like Asserpe’s event are rare opportunities to bring together the Brazilian radio ecosystem in person. The Northeast region, one of the most populous in the country, will be represented—but without discussing what should be the central point of the sector’s transformation.
The program focuses on innovation, artificial intelligence, the relevance of radio and TV, and future-oriented solutions. Yet, paradoxically, it ignores the digitalization process—the only concrete path for radio to withstand the impact of the internet and other digital media.
Year after year, the same inconclusive debates are repeated, while the one issue that could truly set the sector apart—digital radio—remains neglected. Most Brazilian broadcasters have no clear notion of what digital radio means. This lack of knowledge generates fear of change, even as they struggle to compete with digital platforms. The trend is that things will worsen, and the absence of a solid presence of digital radio standards in Brazil only deepens this delay.
Let me be clear: Brazil is not a country that typically follows industry trends closely. To gain ground here, digital radio standards must invest in entering the discussions of those who actually shape broadcasting. This is not a market that will spontaneously run after digital radio—especially after the failed attempt in the early 2000s.
That experience left a lasting trauma. Few stations experimented, but the chaos of the hybrid transmission phase scared broadcasters away. Today, that issue could be solved, since the introduction of digital radio could start with the AM band, which is practically vacant in Brazil and ready to be revitalized.
I Don’t Even Blame Them
I don’t even blame the event organizers for not including the digital radio agenda. They structured the event based on demands identified by the broadcasters within their own circle, who, naturally, just like the rest of the country, are quite distant from this debate. Bringing digital radio standards into the discussion would actually be a very positive and unexpected surprise, certainly a big surprise.
It's time
I believe there is still enough time for the digital radio agenda to be included, and even with real chances of becoming the main highlight of the event. This could definitively establish a turning point on a subject that, if better understood by the sector, would certainly be strongly embraced.
It does not need to be repeated: international standards must take the first step and reach out to the Brazilian broadcasting sector. Diplomatic engagement will be essential, and inevitably, the interested industry will have to invest in creating continuous communication channels with broadcasters in the country.
The warning has been given: there is still time for the topic to be included and elevated at the event. I repeat, digital radio could indeed become the main star of this meeting with the local industry.

Relevance
The Encontro Asserpe 2025 reinforces the organization’s commitment to innovation and the development of media in the Northeast. However, the absence of digital radio in its agenda exposes a strategic gap that may compromise the sector’s future, leaving Brazilian radio increasingly vulnerable in an environment dominated by digital platforms.
