Digital Radio Technologies: DAB, DRM, and HD Radio Competing in Brazil

Atualizado: 3 de mai.

The Digital Radio Workshop: Evolution and New Possibilities of Digital Operations took place on January 22, 2025, bringing together major players in the radio digitization process. These groups showcased their technologies, aiming to persuade Brazil to adopt them. The country lags significantly in this race, trailing even nations with much lower development indices. To address this stagnation, commendable initiatives have emerged to advance the digitization of Brazilian radio.

When we talk about digital radio, we’re not referring to receivers with digital displays or push-button tuning. It’s about an entirely new way of broadcasting audio over radio waves, using digital encoding that replaces analog signals, which are prone to quality limitations, static, and interference. Digital technology offers greater reliability, superior sound quality, expanded services, and efficient alert systems.

A Recap of the Debate Among the Leading Players in Digital Radio Worldwide: DAB, DRM, and HDRADIO.

In video presentations with Portuguese subtitles, we see what these major players have to offer with their digital radio standards for the Brazilian market. The interest is real: this is a highly attractive market for any player, with fierce competition among experienced contenders who certainly have advancements to showcase.

Presentations were made for the DAB, DRM, and HD Radio standards, all candidates to become the official digital radio system in Brazil. I acknowledge that it was necessary for the leading representatives of each system to deliver their presentations, which explains why they were conducted in English. However, I believe that any of these presentations could—and should—be repeated in Portuguese. Each group must understand that their target audience is Brazilian: if just one presentation had been delivered in Portuguese while the others remained in English, that group would have gained a significant head start with the average audience and with many technical professionals who feel more comfortable with content in their native language.

Regarding the PDF materials made available to us Brazilians: once again, it is rich content, but it commits the grave mistake of not offering a Portuguese version. Translating this material would be quite straightforward and would make a tremendous difference. Nevertheless, here we are—a committed and enthusiastic group working for the advancement of digital radio in Brazil, striving to generate public interest. We must aim not only to speak among ourselves—enthusiasts and technical experts—but to engage the general public. Without them, any debate will remain trapped within isolated bubbles.

I am deeply grateful for the initiative by ZYDIGITAL. Without efforts like this, we could easily spend more decades without progress on digital radio, just as we have over the past 20 years.
